Teaching Assistant - Corning/Winfield

Pro Action's Birth to 5 Head Start Program is looking for Teaching Assistants to join our team in the Corning, NY area. Teaching Assistant positions are full time, 10-month (school year calendar) positions that are eligible for benefits including health insurance, generous paid holidays, and a retirement plan with employer contributions.

Teaching Assistants partner with the Certified Teacher and other classroom staff in the planning and implementation of daily activities in the preschool classroom, while adhering to Head Start Performance Standards, New York State Office of Children and Family Services Day Care Regulations and all other applicable program regulations. Will be responsible for recording observations of children’s development and supporting child health screenings.

Working in a team environment, Teaching Assistants participate in weekly planning sessions, attend training and meetings as required, ensure a safe and healthy classroom environment, work to establish positive relationships with families, assist in classroom and program modifications and help with inventory as needed.

Summary of Job Duties

Assist in completing developmental screening on all enrolled children within 45 days of enrollment.

Make ongoing observations of children’s development and maintain anecdotal records.

Assist lead teacher in utilizing the Teaching Strategies GOLD child outcomes Assessment. Tool at each of three required checkpoints.

Enter classroom observations into GOLD.

Assist teacher to complete assessments on individual children.

Participate in weekly planning sessions for the purpose of writing lesson plans, activities and learning objectives that meet both the group and individual needs of enrolled children according to the Head Start Program Performance Standards, New York State Foundation for the Common Core, results of Child Outcomes assessments, individual IEP’s and other applicable regulations.

Ensure implementation of the developed lesson plans and learning objectives assigned by the teacher.

Carry out task assignments related to daily preparation of the classroom as per planned activities and learning objectives.

Perform and meet required role of Mandated Reporter.

Drive to other agency or program locations to assist with program services/activities as needed.

Ideal Skills

Strong organizational and basic math skills.

Communication and language skills to comprehend documents and other correspondence.

Strong computer skills with basic knowledge of Excel Microsoft office and other office equipment such as copier, scanner, fax, etc.

Ability to interact with customers from a variety of backgrounds and with different levels of management.

The Teaching Assistant position requires an Associate Degree or Child Development Associate (CDA) or current enrollment in a program leading to a CDA or Associates Degree and experience in a preschool program setting.

A valid driver’s license meeting agency standards and passing multiple background checks are also required.
