About the Department

The Marketing and Communications Department set our brand tone. They construct and magnify stories and messages to help and inspire people through running, across advertising, media, brand strategy, creative materials, video, photography, race broadcasts, editorial, brand presentations, and multiple web and digital platforms. They connect with the world's best athletes and ambassadors to deepen NYRR's mission. They leverage channels ranging from international broadcasts to screens at our NYRR RUNCENTER, individual emails to mass media, and from digital journeys to race day signage. The Marketing and Communications team connects NYRR's initiatives and innovations to the hearts and minds of our community, inspiring them to run for life. Broadcast & Video Production team oversees NYRR’s live television broadcasts, including the TCS New York City Marathon and United Airlines NYC Half, and manages the organizations video content creation with a focus on developing compelling and entertaining video content around existing events, programs, and initiatives to raise awareness, drive engagement, and attract monetization opportunities for the organization.

About the Internship

The New York Road Runners Internship program is a paid, 21-week experience in which interns have the opportunity to learn from the best in the non-profit business. Interns will work collaboratively with professionals in their field of study and will have opportunities to network across the organization. The program will include professional development events and a chance to make a direct impact on the communities in New York City by working select events. Interns will receive onboarding and training to learn about NYRR and gain the knowledge needed to best perform in their role.

Internship dates will be Monday, June 15, 2026 to Friday, November 13, 2026.

The ideal candidate for this role is someone who loves social media and has a firm understanding of both the art and the science underpinning what makes people like, comment, engage, but ultimately, build a positive digital relationship with New York Road Runners.

The person we hire for this role will be a creative thinker with experience producing social media content across all major and emerging platforms and a curiosity and openness to understanding why some things work and others don’t.

The person we hire for this role must also have strong smartphone photography and videography skills. These events often happen outside of business hours, so a willingness to be flexible with working on weekends and evenings is a must! (It’s important to note that any weekend work will count towards the 25 hour work week.)

You don’t need to have run a marathon for this job, but it’s a big plus if you are a runner and have a good understanding of the running community, particularly in New York City, as that’s going to be your audience.

Intern Responsibilities(primary and secondary duties):

  • Assist with the social media process from start through completion, including planning, testing and producing, and publishing
  • Assist with photo & video content creation when applicable and produce on-site race day coverage
  • Assist with social engagement across all platforms
  • Proofread social media content for clarity, grammar, and spelling before posting

Internship Hours:

  • Interns will work 25 hours per week Monday through Friday.
  • Interns are required to work the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 1st, as well two other weekend events (dates to be determined).
  • Other weekend event-based work may be required and will be evaluated as needed based on position.

Internship Requirements:

  • Sophomore or junior in college, working towards a degree in Marketing, Communications, English Literature, Creative Writing, Photography, Film or related discipline
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work occasional weekends or evenings
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Experience with photo/video editing a plus (Photoshop/Premiere or social-centric editors like Capcut, Canva, Edits)
  • Excellent project management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple simultaneous projects under tight deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

Physical Requirements:

  • The ability to be on your feet, outside in the elements for the duration of event shifts

Salary: $22/hour
