Division/Program Summary:
The mission of the Bureau of Environmental Disease Prevention is to prevent environmental disease and injury in homes, communities, and the workplace, and to protect health by promoting healthy environments and health equity. The Bureau is comprised of four programs – Healthy Homes (HHP), Environmental Exposure Assessment and Education (EEAE), Poison Control Center (PCC), and the Office of Environmental Investigations (OEI).
Position Summary:
The Public Health Nurse will provide ongoing communication and education to health care providers and families to address any issues that arise during efforts to eliminate lead hazards in the children’s or pregnant women’s environments or decrease their blood lead levels. The Public Health Nurse I will report to Public Health Nurses III in the program.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide care coordination for lead poisoned children and pregnant individuals.
- Identify possible lead hazards in the environment of lead-poisoned children and pregnant individuals and recommend ways to limit their lead exposure.
- Participate in the development and implementation of measures to prevent lead exposure.
- Provide information to the public and medical community on lead poisoning prevention.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
1. A Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nursing from a regionally-accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable educational practices;
and
2. A license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Candidates will be examined to determine whether they can perform the essential functions of the position of Public Health Nurse. SPECIAL NOTE B
For assignment to Assignment Levels II and III, in addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements described above, individuals must meet the supervisory level qualification requirements set forth in Section 11.42 of the New York State Sanitary Code.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in public health nursing. - Experience working with families with young children. - Experience working with pregnant women. - Possess excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills. - Detailed oriented with outstanding organizational skills. - Ability to multi-task. - Computer literate. - Fluency in foreign languages is not required, but it is a plus.
