Position Overview

Group Leaders and Group Workers are responsible for providing daily supervision, guidance, and support to a designated group of elementary-aged participants in NIDC's after-school program. Working under the supervision of the Program Director and Assistant Program Director, the Youth Worker helps create a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment that promotes academic success, social-emotional development, leadership, and recreation.

Duties and Responsibilities, in concert with NIDC Youth Department Staff:

  • Reports directly to the Program Director and Assistant Program Director.
  • Supervise and ensure the safety and well-being of an assigned group of participants throughout the program day.
  • Arrive at the program site at least ten (10) minutes prior to participant arrival.
  • Assist in planning and implementing engaging daily activities that support academic enrichment, social-emotional learning, recreation, leadership, arts, and wellness.
  • Prepare materials and supplies necessary for planned activities.
  • Escort participants safely to classrooms, activity spaces, the cafeteria, playgrounds, and educational field trips.
  • Lead organized games, recreational activities, and team-building exercises.
  • Maintain and organize program equipment, games, and supplies.
  • Support Activity Specialists and guest presenters during enrichment programming.
  • Maintain accurate daily attendance, dismissal records, and required participant documentation.
  • Promptly report accidents, illnesses, incidents, behavioral concerns, and safety issues to the Program Director.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming program environment.
  • Participate in staff meetings, mandatory trainings, professional development, and organization-wide events.
  • Ensure compliance with NYC Department of Health, DYCD, OCFS, DOE, and NIDC policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a positive role model while fostering an inclusive and respectful environment for all youth.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred; applicants currently enrolled in high school, a GED program, or college are encouraged to apply.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience working with children in an after-school program, daycare, school, camp, SYEP, or similar youth development setting preferred.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with youth, families, and school staff.
  • Reliable, responsible, and able to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be available Monday through Friday between the hours of 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM , with occasional evening or weekend meetings, trainings, or special events.
  • Must complete required annual professional development.

· A current physical examination and TB test are required. All site-based staff must successfully complete fingerprint clearance prior to employment.

This is a part-time position with approximately 20 hours per week.
