Surgical Technician (Norwich)
Facility note: Mon-Thurs 0630-1700 with on-call coverage required- nights, holidays, weekends. On-call responsibilities: typically include 810 on-call shifts per month, with 12 weekend shifts (Friday 0630 through Monday 0630). A 20-minute response time is required in the event of an emergency.

Duties:
Job Summary:
Under general direction, observes and practices sterile technique, maintains asepsis, anticipates and assists the surgeon as needed. Actively participates in patient care and safety. Utilizes OR supplies conservatively and operates as a team member of the OR staff.
Job Responsibilities:
-Follows Infection Control policies and procedures and demonstrates expertise in surgical scrub technique.
-Adheres to principles of sterile technique preoperatively and intra-operatively.
-Assists the surgeon when needed with gowning, gloving, draping, and passing of instruments and other related items during the procedure. Anticipates the surgeons need for instruments, sutures, and equipment.
-Maintains an organized operative field at all times by keeping the instruments clean and in their proper place.
-Keeps an accurate sponge, tape, needle, dissector, and instrument count.
-Prepares for cases by assembling supplies and equipment in accordance with preference cards and identifies conflicts or problems. Cares appropriately for instruments and supplies after each case.
-Provides a safe surgical environment for the patient, identifying potential hazards to the surgeon, RN, and assisting RN circulator in preoperative checks of equipment.
-Displays knowledge of potential hazards (equipment, chemicals, or gases) within the Operating Room.
-Utilizes experienced OR staff as a resource, and acts as a resource for new OR personnel.
-Assists in suturing, retracting, and suctioning under the direction of the surgeon.
-Handles and identifies specimens per policy.
-Expedites the effective and efficient turnover of the OR between cases.
-Takes rotating call duty.
-Will perform additional responsibilities, as requested.
Skills:
Required Skills & Experience:
-Maternity experience/General ortho/general surgery/OBGYN
Preferred Skills & Experience:
-Previous Operating Room experience.
-Previous Surgical Technologist experience.
Education:
Required Education:
-High School diploma or equivalent.
Required Certifications & Licensure:
-Certified Surgical Technologist - NBSTSA - National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or National Health Career Association.
-BLS Certification (AHA, HSI, or American Red Cross).
