Research Assistant, Accessibility & Inclusive Design
Lead and execute research and implementation initiatives that advance Heartshare’s accessible communication framework across programs. This role drives the evaluation, development, and integration of assistive technologies and inclusive design practices, ensuring accessibility is embedded as a core component of service delivery. Through cross-functional collaboration, external partnerships, and user-centered research, the position supports innovative solutions that enhance communication, promote autonomy, and improve outcomes for individuals served.
Lead research, evaluation, and implementation of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools, assistive technologies, and inclusive communication strategies across programs.
Launch and drive accessibility-centered research initiatives, positioning inclusive design as a core organizational priority.
Conduct landscape analyses, including engagement with internal/external experts, review of peer models, emerging trends, and relevant regulatory considerations.
Translate research into actionable insights, recommendations, and scalable solutions.
Lead coordination of the NYU Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) partnership and mentor independent study students.
Collaborate cross-functionally to test, refine, and implement innovative solutions and prototypes.
Support Innovation Studio initiatives, including development and management of assistive technology resources.
Conduct user research, site visits, and data collection to identify needs, barriers, and opportunities.
Oversee research operations, including scheduling, participant coordination, and data archiving.
Deliver weekly and monthly progress updates and participate in regular check-ins with leadership.
Co-develop and facilitate workshops with the Director of Accessibility and Assistive Technology to promote accessibility, universal design, and the social model of disability.
Represent Heartshare in external forums, conferences, and strategic partnerships
- Bachelor's Degree
- 3-5 Years in UX or related Services
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills
- Highly energetic, focused, and accountable.
- Good collaborative skills
- Familiar with Microsoft Office Suite
