The School of Education at the University at Albany, State University of New York, seeks to fill a tenure-track, assistant professor position in Special Education. This position resides within the Department of Educational and Counseling Psychology, which includes the Divisions of Special Education, Educational Psychology, Counseling Psychology, and School Psychology. The successful applicant will be dually appointed to the Division of Special Education and the Division of Educational Psychology. In conjunction with the School of Education, the Division is actively engaged in diversifying the educational profession and creating equitable learning and teaching environments for all. Current faculty research interests include teacher preparation; inclusion; critical theories (e.g., DisCrit and QuantCrit) in special education research; anti-racist practices, policies, interventions and models in special education; disability studies; interventions for autistic students; culturally responsive Multi-tiered Systems of Support; literacy interventions for students with disabilities; and problem-solving approaches to math instruction for students with disabilities.

The ideal candidate will 1) teach undergraduate- and graduate-level courses with possible online offerings; 2) maintain a successful program of research and publication 3) secure external grant funding to support research; 4) direct doctoral research and independent studies; 5) advise and mentor master's and doctoral students and 6) advance social justice in teaching and research.

Minimum Qualifications:

A earned doctorate in special education or a relevant discipline from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization by 8/15/2026. Candidates who will not hold the degree by this date will not be considered.

Minimum of three years PK -12 classroom teaching experience in special education
-
Extensive preparation in evidence-based special education methods and strategies
-
Coherent research agenda and scholarly productivity in at least one area of Special Education

Evidence of strong research skills
-
Strong potential for writing grants and obtaining external funding
-
Experience and interest in undergraduate and graduate level teaching
-
Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with culturally diverse populations

Evidence of collaborative work with university faculty and students, school- and district-based educational practitioners, school-aged students and their parents

Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community

Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role
Preferred Qualifications:

Clear evidence of successful teaching of Special Education content in higher education

Interest and/or activity in public engagement

Experience and scholarship focused on secondary education

Research agenda and/or scholarly activity that advances social justice in education

Established track record of writing grants and obtaining external funding
