Veterinarian

The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter is a well-established, fast paced animal shelter seeking full-time and part-time Veterinarians to serve the animals in our care. The shelter is located in Wantagh, NY and serves the largest township in the country. We are looking for veterinarians and vet techs who are compassionate, team players and strong communicators. The ideal candidates for veterinarians would be comfortable and open to performing surgery, diagnosing and treating medical cases, examining and vaccinating all new animals and managing the care of all animals in the shelter’s care. COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES

The duties are performed under administrative supervision. The work is reviewed through conferences and reports. Supervises and trains subordinate Animal Shelter staff.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES (Illustrative Only)

1. Manages the medical care of animals in the Animal Shelter.

2. Performs triage functions in caring for sick animals; establishes medical protocols.

3. Performs major and minor surgeries, spaying, and neutering of animals.

4. Prescribes and orders medication/s.

5. Performs euthanasia on animals when necessary.

6. Educates staff on basic animal and medical care.

7. Establishes and maintains working relationships with other Veterinarians, rescue groups, and civic organizations.

8. Establishes and oversees basic protocols for staff of Animal Shelter, including: disease and vector control; sanitary and sterility practices; operating theater procedures; etc.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Thorough knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of veterinary medicine.

2. Thorough knowledge of laboratory procedures and practices.

3. Thorough knowledge of diagnostic procedures, prescription protocols, and treatment methods.

4. Good knowledge of supervisory techniques and methods.

5. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and specialized records.

6. Ability to plan, direct, and supervise the activities of a support staff in specified procedures.

7. Ability to work with the general public, civic organizations, and other municipal agencies.

8. Ability to express concepts and ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Training and Experience

1. Three years of satisfactory full-time, paid veterinary experience in a private practice;

or

2. Two years of satisfactory full-time, paid veterinary experience in a nonprofit, municipal, or military setting.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of a New York State Veterinary License.
