About Collective Retreats Governors Island

We are excited to unveil Dovetail’s latest partnership with Collective Retreats Hotels. Collective Retreats Governors Island is a seasonal hospitality property located in Governors Island, in New York City, just minutes from Manhattan.

The retreat features 29 luxury glamping accommodations, along with a large-scale events venue hosting a range of private and corporate events throughout the season. The property also includes a full food and beverage offering, with one on-site restaurant and one bar serving both overnight guests and event attendees.

Operating on a seasonal basis, the retreat requires a hands-on and adaptable approach to managing all aspects of operations, guest experience, and team performance during its active months.

Job Overview

We are looking for a skilled, personable, and guest-focused Bartender to craft exceptional beverage experiences at Collective Retreats Governors Island. You will be responsible for operating the bar with creativity and precision, ensuring every guest encounter at the bar is warm, memorable, and reflective of the retreat’s distinctive character.

Our ideal candidate brings a natural hospitality instinct, strong cocktail and beverage knowledge, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, outdoor seasonal environment. You will work closely with the F&B Manager and service team to deliver a bar program that reflects the retreat’s signature style — relaxed, creative, and deeply personal. This is a seasonal role running alongside the retreat’s operating season (approximately May through November 2026).

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

Bar Operations & Guest Service:

· Greet and welcome guests at the bar with warmth and professionalism, creating an inviting atmosphere that encourages guests to linger and return

· Prepare and serve cocktails, wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages to the highest standards of quality and consistency, following established recipes while also exercising creativity when appropriate

· Maintain comprehensive knowledge of the beverage program, including cocktail menu, wine list, beer selection, and non-alcoholic offerings, in order to provide confident, personalized recommendations to guests

· Monitor guest satisfaction at the bar, anticipate needs proactively, and resolve any service issues promptly and with genuine care

· Process payments accurately and efficiently; handle cash and card transactions in accordance with property procedures and applicable liquor service regulations

Bar Management & Team Support:

· Complete all bar opening and closing procedures, including restocking, cleaning, polishing glassware, and preparing mise en place for the next service

· Attend pre-shift briefings to stay informed on daily specials, VIP guests, inventory levels, and service priorities

· Collaborate with the service team and kitchen to ensure smooth, cohesive F&B operations throughout each shift

· Support bar service at private events, corporate gatherings, and other on-site programming as required

· Maintain a clean, organized, and fully stocked bar at all times in compliance with all health, safety, and liquor service standards

Compensation

· The Bartender role offers an hourly rate of $17.00 per hour. Wages will be paid in accordance with Dovetail’s regular payroll schedule. This position is a tipped position and gratuities received in the course of employment are considered part of your total compensation.

· This position is not eligible for benefits; however, it offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience within a distinctive, growing hospitality portfolio.

Knowledge, Requirements, and Skills

· 2+ years of bartending experience required; experience in a hotel, resort, or craft cocktail environment is strongly preferred

· Warm, engaging, and guest-focused demeanor with a genuine passion for craft beverage and creating memorable bar experiences

· Solid knowledge of classic and contemporary cocktail technique, spirits, wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverage preparation

· Ability to work efficiently and composedly in a high-volume, fast-paced bar environment while maintaining precision and guest focus

· Excellent verbal communication and storytelling skills — able to engage guests confidently about the beverage program, ingredients, and pairings

· Valid TIPS or equivalent responsible alcohol service certification preferred; must be able to comply with all applicable liquor service laws and property policies

· Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, and comfort working in an outdoor, nature-forward environment — this role operates on an island, accessible by ferry

As part of an organizational culture that embraces change and progress, this job description does not seek to limit the tasks and responsibilities of the position. Rather, it acts as a springboard for future career and personal development within the property team and the entire Dovetail portfolio.
