Join the 2026 New York Times Fellowship class as a vertical video editor in the Opinion section in New York.

As a vertical video editor, you will create vertical videos for nytimes.com and social media. While editing is at the core of this position, you will be equal parts producer, writer and editor. This opportunity will allow you to conceive of new video formats for mobile-first journalism.

You will exercise journalistic and creative judgment to ensure excellence and accuracy in your work, and you should be eager to experiment with different forms of vertical and mobile visual storytelling. You might be hosting a video one day and the next day be deep in an edit or rewrite of a script. You will collaborate with the Opinion Audience team, as well as department journalists and external contributors.

This is an in-office position and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance. You may be required to work some nights, weekends and holidays as needed.

Responsibilities

• Produce, write and edit vertical videos
• Act as a host in some videos to help translate our journalism for off-site audiences
• Write engaging SEO-driven social captions
• Post videos to our site and platforms such as TikTok and YouTube
• Collaborate with other journalists and editors to adapt, script and edit videos
• Work with editors on inventive on-site and social formats that align with Opinion’s mission and identity
• Participate in training and social programs designed for the fellowship
• Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
  
  

Basic Qualifications

• No more than five years of full-time, professional journalism experience, excluding internships
• 3+ years of experience with creative video editing, with demonstrated success in the creation of innovative journalism in a fast-paced environment
• Can produce and publish short form vertical videos on tight deadlines
• Experience in video and graphics editing with Adobe Premiere and AfterEffects
• Experience in archive producing, including using photo, video, graphics and audio
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Record of multiple journalism internships, or equivalent experience
• Can appear and speak on camera as a host
• Deep knowledge of TikTok and Instagram, and broad knowledge of the social media landscape and awareness of new platform trends as they change

You may apply to only one fellowship position per year. For instance, if you apply as an Opinion video fellow, you should not apply for any other positions in the fellowship. Duplicate applications will be discarded.

The Times Fellowship generates a high level of interest, so we cannot acknowledge the status of applications upon receipt or during the vetting process, which can take eight weeks or more. We cannot accept applications that are mailed or emailed to us. We will contact you for interviews as needed.

The fellowship program will begin on or about June 1, 2026, and end on May 21, 2027, subject to satisfactory performance. There is no guarantee of a full-time position upon completion of the program.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$82,414.80—$82,414.80 USD
