The NYU Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools is a research and professional learning services center that supports equity-focused, evidence-based innovations in educational research and programming. We operate as a complex collective of multiple sub-units with different areas of specialization.
NYU Metro Center’s work falls into five categories: 1) technical assistance to districts and schools; 2) professional learning to teachers and leaders; 3) applied research and evaluation of district and school programs; 4) scholarly research conducted by NYU Metro Center researchers and NYU faculty affiliates; and 5) youth development programs including college readiness, youth-led advocacy and organizing, and youth participatory action research. NYU Metro Center has a history of experience providing assistance and mobilizing resources to address a variety of issues related to educational inequity, segregation, disproportionality, discrimination of all kinds, and social injustice.
The Education Justice Research and Organizing Collaborative (EJROC) at the NYU Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools is seeking a Senior Associate for Movement Building to support national movement-building in the education justice field across multiple local, state and national partners, including Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools, HEAL Together, Journey for Justice Alliance, NEA, AFT and others.
EJ-ROC brings together researchers, data and policy analysts, and community organizers to provide critical research, data, policy and strategic support to the education justice movement. EJ-ROC builds on the long tradition of movement-driven, community-derived research in our two main areas of work: on-demand, rapid-response research and data analysis; and strategic assistance to education organizing groups to employ campaign strategies, leadership development, coalition-building and communication plans that help win equitable education policies. EJ-ROC employs these strategies with an explicit racial justice lens to maximize the synergy between research and community organizing, magnify the voices and power of grassroots communities of color, and advance the capacity of organizing efforts to make demands, design solutions, ensure quality implementation, and sustain policy wins.
We are seeking a [Part-Time] [Senior Associate of Movement Building to support our team in the following ways:
Co-lead strategic support for the growth and development of the Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools (AROS) and other national and regional ed justice movement formations
Lead design and implementation of the National Education Justice Training Hub, including designing and leading trainings on a variety of topics
Lead design and implementation of one or more national coordinated campaigns, in collaboration with local and national partners; including strategy, implementation and coaching for partners as well as securing research and communications as needed
Co-lead ongoing efforts to create a healthy, liberatory culture within EJ-ROC and the national ed justice formations
Participate in and support HEAL Together organizing team, including participation and leadership in strategy, planning retreats and convenings
Provide strategic organizing support to local and statewide education justice groups, connected to national campaigns
Position Summary
The Director of Movement Building will support national movement-building in the education justice field across multiple local, state and national partners, including Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools, HEAL Together, Journey for Justice Alliance, NEA, AFT and others.
This role is a hybrid position. The job duties for this position require onsite presence 60-80% of the time (i.e., 2-3 days per week).
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
[20%] Co-lead strategic support for the growth and development of the Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools (AROS) and other national and regional ed justice movement formations
[35%] Lead design and implementation of the National Education Justice Training Hub, including designing and leading trainings on a variety of topics
[20%] Lead design and implementation of one or more national coordinated campaigns, in collaboration with local and national partners; including strategy, implementation and coaching for partners as well as securing research and communications as needed
[10%] Co-lead ongoing efforts to create a healthy, liberatory culture within the national ed justice formations
[5%] [Participate in and support HEAL Together organizing team, including participation and leadership in strategy, planning retreats and convenings
[10%] [Provide strategic organizing support to local and statewide education justice groups, connected to national campaigns
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the hourly salary range for this position is $67.66 -$78.35. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate is, first and foremost, committed to our organizational mission and vision and reflects the following Qualifications:
Required Experience:
10 years experience as a community organizer and/or coalition coordinator
5 years experience leading local, state or national organizing or political campaigns with multiple fronts and involving multiple partners
5 years planning, designing and conducting trainings for organizing groups
Demonstrated commitment to justice and liberation for historically marginalized people.
Cultural competency that includes strong understanding and experience with dynamics related to race, gender, ability, language, immigration, socioeconomics
Required Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:
Working knowledge of education policy
Preferred Education:
Graduate degree
Preferred Experience:
Strong grounding and experience with the essentials of community organizing: outreach and base-building, campaign planning, leadership development, direct action, media, etc
Ability to manage multiple projects and timelines independently and effectively
Relationships with local, state and/or national education justice organizations, preferable
