The Styles desk is looking for an experienced and ambitious journalist to cover emerging political styles. This beat focuses on the communities, figures, emerging ideologies and media structures that have risen out of a loosely-connected web of young influencers, activists, pundits, streamers, trolls, bloggers, new media platforms, and political organizations which have long operated on the margins of mainstream culture. It will tell a story about the ways in which the internet, political stagnation, social dysfunction, dimming economic futures and generational anxieties have collided to reshuffle our existing political order.

This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:

  • You will have an eye for the new: What is going to happen soon in the culture? Who are the people pushing those changes, and where are they coming from? How do they express themselves online and offline?

  • You will highlight the way the online right has steadily built an alternative cultural ecosystem, where extreme political thought, taboo cultural opinions and conspiratorial thinking are the norm.

  • You will come armed with lots of story ideas, and will write frequently.

  • You will collaborate with editors, fellow reporters on Styles, and across desks at the paper.

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence ( and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • You will report to the Styles Desk.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience as a reporter.

  • Experience writing long-lead, thoughtful profiles as well as quick-turnaround scene report or news analysis.

  • Demonstrated experience as a graceful stylist and a resourceful reporter.

  • Impeccable journalistic ethics and the ability to report critically and fairly.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Deep contacts in worlds like tech, politics, or finance.

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$113,270.67 - $125,000 USD
