Family Worker, Harlem Gems
Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) — a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York — seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission-aligned Family Worker at our Harlem Gems North Pre-School.
The Family Worker will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Children’s Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.
The Family Worker will join our Gems Preschool team to prepare our youngest scholars to succeed in K-12 and beyond by building a strong academic foundation and starting them on the path to college and career. The individual will care deeply about children, respect the culture of Harlem’s residents, and is eager to make an impact in our community and beyond.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree
- 1 - 3 years of relevant work experience(social work, psychology, counseling, human services, etc.) required
Who you are
- Some knowledge of child welfare and ACS (Administration for Children’s Services)
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Expertise knowledge of the Harlem community and locations where parents are connected
- Demonstrate sensitivity, tact, and professionalism in dealing with others
- Passion for children and families and a strong connection to the community
- Bilingual a plus (English/French, or English/Spanish)
- CPR/AED certification is a huge plus
What you’ll do
- Recruit, evaluate, enroll, and familiarize eligible families with the Harlem Gems program
- Facilitate and support parent involvement within the program and community
- Plan and lead home visits and participate in daily classroom contacts with families
- Work in partnership with parents and staff through parent meetings, center activities, education opportunities, and support groups
- Perform data entry for the agency database
- Maintain pertinent case notes as they relate to goals for, and progress of, the family
- Perform strengths-based assessments, assist parents in goal setting, and provide crisis intervention and referrals to community resources, including monitoring follow-up and referral outcome
- Work with families to ensure children have health coverage and vaccinations and receive all necessary medical screenings. (Support parents on needed follow-up)
- Plan and facilitate parent workshops
- Serve as a liaison between the school and families
- Maintains ongoing contact with community organizations that are involved with providing services to the school's educational program
- Ensure that information regarding all changes in student status, e.g., service changes and discharges, are accurately maintained in the student information system
- Attend CPSE/ Case conference meetings as needed and prepare meeting minutes
- Able to perform general office administrative activities: copying, filing, delivering, and using the telephone system called Ring Central
- Perform other duties as assigned
Schedule
- Monday-Friday
- Rotating schedule (alternating days): 7:40-4:00 and 10:00-6:00
