Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and entrepreneurial Postdoctoral Associate or Research Scientist to join our newly launched research program in Thomsen Laboratory of Biomolecular Pharmacology at New York University, focused on the development of therapeutics targeting G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). Our recent discoveries have uncovered a novel signaling paradigm in which certain GPCRs continue to signal from internalized compartments through the formation of a unique receptor complex, termed the “megaplex” (Thomsen, Plouffe, Cahill III et al. (2016), Cell; Nguyen, Thomsen, Cahill III et al. (2019), Nat Struct Mol Biol; Hahn, Daly, Little IV et al. (2025), eLife). As we delve deeper into the functional role of this mechanism, it has become increasingly evident that its dysregulation can contribute to harmful and pathogenic outcomes. To address this, our lab is developing an innovative therapeutic strategy aimed at selectively shutting down persistent GPCR signaling. This approach leverages a class of compounds we call allosteric uncouplers, which hold significant promise for the treatment of several diseases with unmet medical needs.
Primary Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will lead the development of allosteric uncouplers toward commercialization and assess their potential as a safe non-opioid therapeutic strategy for pain management . Key research responsibilities include:
- Pharmacological optimization of lead compound series using cell-based assays and structural biology approaches.
- Assessment of compound efficacy in ex vivo systems and in vivo pain behavior models through collaboration with the core facilities at the NYU Pain Research Center.
- Coordination of research activities with core facility directors and external collaborators.
- Dissemination of research findings through patent filings, conference presentations, and/or peer-reviewed publications.
The position also includes responsibilities that go beyond traditional academic research and into the commercialization and entrepreneurship space, including:
- Evaluating the commercial potential of lab technologies.
- Participating in tech transfer activities with NYU's Office of Industrial Liaison.
- Engaging in entrepreneurship training, pitch competitions, and networking events.
- Developing foundational skills in market analysis, IP strategy, and business model design.
- Exploring funding avenues including SBIR/STTR grants and startup accelerators.
- Building connections with the local biotech and venture ecosystem.
Our lab is committed to training the next generation of scientist-entrepreneurs who can bridge the gap between laboratory discoveries and real-world applications.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $58,500 - $62,500. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
Qualifications
We are seeking candidates with a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree who demonstrate a strong interest in entrepreneurship and the ability to proactively lead research projects .
- The ideal candidate is a highly motivated and creative thinker who can work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative and team-oriented environment . Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential.
- Prior experience in GPCR pharmacology, structural biology, or medicinal chemistry is highly desirable, though not vital. A strong aptitude for problem-solving and experimental troubleshooting is critical.
- Given the project’s focus on commercializing allosteric uncouplers, foundational knowledge of the drug discovery and development process as well as an interest in startup environments is considered a significant plus.
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. and/or M.D. in Biomedical Research is required.
