About the Family
A warm, loving, and private family in Kings Point, New York is seeking a dedicated live-in Caregiver/Companion to support their 21-year-old son with autism. Their son is verbal, kind-hearted, enjoys being around others, and thrives with consistent guidance, encouragement, and meaningful interaction. He is on the middle of the autism spectrum, with his greatest challenges being communication and independence. He is not aggressive and has a calm, easygoing personality.
The family considers their son the center of their world and is searching for a compassionate, long-term caregiver who will become a trusted and valued part of their household. The ideal candidate will serve as a true right-hand person to the family, providing exceptional support while encouraging the young man's continued growth and independence.
The family has three children, including two adult daughters. They live out of the home.
Travel
This is a travel-intensive position. The caregiver must be comfortable traveling with the family throughout the year or remaining at the family's home with their son when the parents travel.
Typical travel includes:
- Florida for Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year's
- St. Barts during the winter
- The Hamptons in August
- Various destinations throughout Europe
Responsibilities
- Provide attentive one-on-one companionship and supervision throughout the day.
- Encourage communication, social engagement, and continued development of independent living skills.
- Assist with morning and evening routines, including dressing, personal hygiene, and bedtime preparation.
- Prepare breakfast and assist with meals throughout the day.
- Provide hands-on assistance with toileting and hygiene, including ensuring proper cleaning after bathroom use. Candidates must be completely comfortable assisting with personal care.
- Assist with washing up, changing clothes, and maintaining excellent daily hygiene.
- Maintain appropriate supervision by accompanying him throughout the home while allowing him appropriate personal space.
- Engage him in conversation and meaningful interaction throughout the day, providing consistent language exposure in clear English.
- Accompany him to activities such as bowling, restaurants, outings, and community activities. He enjoys being out of the house and connects especially well with adults.
- Ride with the family's driver during school pick-up and drop-off as needed.
- Support his bedtime routine around 7:30 PM, helping him get into pajamas before lights out.
- Overnight monitoring is required using bedroom monitors. He rarely wakes during the night, but if he does, the caregiver will assist him back to bed.
Ideal Candidate & Personality
The ideal candidate is naturally nurturing, patient, soft-spoken, and highly compassionate. They should genuinely enjoy building relationships and actively engaging with young adults with developmental differences. Rather than simply supervising, this individual will creatively encourage communication, independence, and meaningful daily experiences.
The family is seeking someone who:
- Is warm, kind, and calm under pressure.
- Thinks outside the box and finds engaging ways to interact.
- Has excellent English communication skills.
- Is proactive rather than passive.
- Is comfortable providing hands-on personal care with dignity and respect.
- Enjoys travel and has a flexible schedule.
- Is seeking a long-term position with a wonderful family.
Requirements
- Prior experience supporting individuals with autism or developmental disabilities is strongly preferred.
- Experience in a private household or as a caregiver, companion, or special needs professional.
- Comfortable providing personal care and hygiene assistance.
- Excellent references.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States.
- CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively, both domestically and internationally.
- Flexible schedule and commitment to a long-term role.
