About Coalition for Hispanic Family Services (CHFS)
CHFS is a community-based, family-focused organization of color providing an array of services to children and families in North Brooklyn and Western Queens. For over 34 years, CHFS has worked with vulnerable populations that include children in foster care, seriously emotionally disturbed children, youth, and families at risk of abuse and neglect. Our strength-based model also supports progressive youth development programs, family support services and community school partnerships, The provision of accessible, high-quality family focused services to families of color is central to our holistic approach of strengthening families in a culturally competent manner. PROGRAM SUMMARY
The Community School at I.S. 291, a program of Coalition for Hispanic Family Services, integrates and aligns school and community-based services, such as health, mental health, expanded learning opportunities and family empowerment. Through collaborative leadership and practice, expanded learning time, attendance improvement, family and community empowerment, and holistic wellness and integrated supports, the Community School program strives to create space that meets the needs of the whole scholar, ensures that all scholars feel connected and experience a sense of belonging, and all communities and families contain assets that should be leveraged for scholar success. The Community School Program operates during the school day with some family engagement and youth events occurring in the evenings.
Beacon Center for Arts & Leadership is an educational, recreational, and social community center program housed within I.S. 291 in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The center offers free and engaging after school programs for middle school youth, summer camp, evening and weekend programs, and full-day programs on most school closure dates. The program prioritizes family and community with a focus on building values, skills, and relationships through a strengths-based approach.
POSITION SUMMARY
40 Hours/Week - Benefits Eligible
We are seeking a dedicated Student Success Mentor & After-School Instructor for a split-role position within two impactful programs: the Community School Program (school-day) and the Beacon After-School Program (afternoons). This role provides a unique opportunity to support middle school students both during and after the school day, fostering their academic success, personal growth, and social-emotional development.
During the school day, as a Student Success Mentor (SSM), you will work closely with chronically absent and disconnected students, implementing strategies to improve attendance, engagement, and academic achievement. You will collaborate with families, teachers, and school staff to support student success and strengthen the school community. After school, you will transition into the role of a Beacon After-School Instructor, where you will facilitate engaging activities, model positive behavior, and support students in a structured and enriching after-school environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES FOR STUDENT SUCCESS MENTOR (School-Day Role):
· Regularly assess student body data for chronic absenteeism and related trends to identify students that would benefit from success mentorship
· Carry a caseload of students deemed severely chronically or chronically absent
· Develop strategic plans and attainable goals for mentees focused on attendance, academics, and/or behavior
· Collaborate with families and teachers to track participant progress
· Support the planning and implementation of school wide events
· Work with mentorship team to plan activities, lunch clubs, family engagement events, and afterschool support
· Perform student and family outreach
· Refer participants to additional resources as needed
· Attend team, school and agency-wide meetings and trainings as assigned
· Complete any other duties assigned by Supervisor(s)
RESPONSIBILITIES FOR BEACON AFTER-SCHOOL INSTRUCTOR (Afternoon Role):
· Develop engaging and developmentally appropriate lesson plans and activities for adolescent youth, exhibiting strong group facilitation skills
· Support with after school academic support programs
· Implement positive behavior management strategies that promote self-reflection and social-emotional growth.
· Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, and off-site trips, ensuring safety at all times
· Support students in developing creative projects for final showcases
· Maintain clean and organized classroom spaces
· Accurately document attendance, incidents, and lesson plans
· Attend staff meetings and professional development sessions
· Complete any other duties assigned by Supervisor(s)
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
· Must be enrolled in college or graduated
· 2+ years of experience working with youth
· The applicant should have a record of successful experiences working in youth settings, should have experience working with children and young adult’s needs, knowledge of positive behavior management, strong group facilitation skills, knowledge of adolescent development and college/career readiness practices, exceptional writing skills, ability to conceptualize and communicate ideas, possess outstanding organizational skills and interest in working with a team, and familiarity with diverse populations
· Occasional flexible schedule required
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
· Bachelor's Degree
· Adolescent youth development experience
· Bilingual-Spanish/English
SCHEDULE
· The SSM/Afterschool Instructor will be hired for a 40 hour/week schedule with shift times occurring M-F between 8am-5pm.
· Although the SSM position is a school-year position, summer employment as an Instructor is probable and may be required. If summer employment within our program is not an option, there is an option to be placed in one of our agency's summer camp programs (hours may differ).
· Paid, mandatory staff trainings are offered seasonally and are mandatory
