Position Title: Legislative Director

Job Description: Seeking full-time, Legislative Director (LD) for NYS Assemblymember Chris Burdick. Ideally, this job would be in-person in Albany during the legislative session. The LD develops and oversees the Member’s legislation at the direction of the Member and in conjunction with the Chief of Staff.

Duties include:

· Drafting, introducing, amending, and keeping track of the status of legislation.

· Performing analyses and research in connection with legislation.

· Drafting correspondence, briefings, talking points, presentations and other materials.

· Providing policy consultation in key areas of interest for the Member and the Member’s staff.

· Managing legislative interns.

· Working on budgetary and policy issues.

· Collaborating with staff, Program and Counsel, counterpart LD’s for Senators, other elected and government officials, constituents, and advocacy organizations.

· From time to time, representing the Member at meetings and pubic events.

· Meeting with advocates, lobbyists, and other groups in Albany.

· Evaluating legislation for cosponsorship.

· Meeting with other offices to garner support for bills.

Qualifications:

· College degree preferred.

· Excellent oral and written communication skills.

· Detail-oriented, with exceptional organizational skills.

· Experience with government and politics, ideally state-level legislative, budgetary, and policymaking processes, preferably but not necessarily in New York.

· Ability to work in Albany weekly during the January-June legislative session, and occasionally during the remainder of the year.

· Ability to work long hours, and some evenings and weekends as necessary at certain times during Session.

· The ability to read a bill line-by-line, cross-reference other parts of law, find flaws, think about unintended consequences, and come up with creative fixes.

· AM Burdick sits on the Assembly Standing Committees for Banks, Correction, Environmental Conservation, Housing, People with Disabilities, and Veterans. Familiarity with these areas is a big plus.

Compensation:

· Salary: $55,000 - $65,000

· Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, paid Assembly holidays, paid vacation and personal days, and retirement (pension) plan.
