Animal Welfare Caucus Director

The City Council's Animal Welfare Caucus is seeking a passionate and dedicated Animal Welfare Caucus Director to lead initiatives advocating for animal rights, welfare, and humane treatment. This dynamic role involves coordinating legislative efforts, fostering partnerships with animal care organizations, and promoting policies that improve the lives of animals across communities. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in animal care, veterinary practices, or related fields, combined with excellent leadership and communication skills.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Facilitate the operations of the Caucus.
  • Collaborate with Caucus members to develop, organize, and implement legislative and budget agendas.
  • Promote and amplify existing agendas of interest to the Caucus.
  • Partner with legislators, government agencies, community organizations, and other stakeholders to advance the Caucus’s legislative and budget priorities.
  • Represent the Caucus at events, meetings, and other engagements with stakeholders.
  • Draft press communications, memoranda, agendas, meeting minutes, and reports.
  • Schedule meetings, briefings, and other appointments.
  • Conduct outreach with collaborative partners in both the public and private sectors.
  • Manage social media channels and produce newsletters.
  • Organize special events and serve as the primary point of contact for these initiatives.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the City Hall office.
  • Supervise support staff by delegating assignments, reviewing work, suggesting strategies, and providing guidance as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in public management, political science, public policy, management, communications, non-profit management, economics, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Two to four years of professional experience in government, management/administration, public policy, legislative affairs, public affairs, non-profits, or community organizations.
  • Passion for animal rights law; understanding the distinction between animal welfare and animal rights is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong multitasking, organizational, and prioritization abilities.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to thrive in fast-paced, politically oriented environments.
  • Proficiency with WordPress and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Fluency in English required; fluency in a second language highly preferred.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

New York City residency required within 90 days of appointment.
