Schedule:
7 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Monday – Friday with the ability to flex shift based on team priorities.
Description: The Custodial Team Coordinator is responsible for leading all custodial operations campus wide. This position provides hands-on leadership ensuring a clean, safe, and well-maintained campus environment. The role supports the college’s mission by maintaining campus infrastructure and appearance in accordance with Paul Smith's College safety, operational, and customer service standards. This role is critical to the success of Campus Operations. Applicants will be reviewed immediately and the search will move quickly.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Custodial Operations Leadership?
Supervise daily custodial operations across assigned campus buildings.
Conduct regular inspections to ensure cleanliness, sanitation, and quality standards are being met.
Develop and manage daily/weekly work schedules for custodial staff.
Oversee response to routine cleaning, deep cleaning, and special project needs.
Ensure proper execution of floor care programs (stripping, waxing, buffing, carpet care)
Staff Management & Development?
Hire, train, and supervise custodial staff and shift leaders, including student workers.
Provide coaching, performance feedback, and corrective action when needed.
Foster a positive, safe, and productive team environment.
Support onboarding and ongoing training in cleaning standards, equipment, and safety.
Customer Service & Campus Engagement?
Create and maintain strong working relationships with faculty, staff, and student life teams.
Respond promptly to service requests, concerns, and special event needs.
Ensure custodial support for campus events, move-in/move-out, and emergencies.
Safety & Compliance?
Adhere to all working college requirements.
Resident expert and trainer campus-wide on OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard (HCS).
Manages, updates, and maintains chemical safety documentation in compliance with OSHA regulations.
Ensures that all related OSHA standards, PPE usage, and chemical safety procedures?are developed, corresponding training is conducted, and all related programs are adhered to.
Ensure compliance with cleaning protocols and infection control standards.
Ensures the proper use and storage of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
Act as the liaison between the organization, suppliers, and regulatory agencies regarding chemical safety information.
Support campus emergency response and weather-related operations (snow, floods, etc.)
Operational Management?
Manage custodial supply inventory and place timely requests with the Sr. Operations Coordinator to ensure that supplies are correct and available at the necessary inventory level.
Monitor staffing levels, productivity, and service quality metrics.
Use work order systems to track tasks and completion status.
Assist?with budget tracking for labor, supplies, and equipment.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree preferred.
2–5+ years of custodial, housekeeping, or facilities supervisory experience.
Experience in higher education, healthcare, or large facilities preferred.
Strong leadership, communication, and customer service skills.
Knowledge of:
custodial cleaning methods and floor care systems
chemical handling and safety procedures
staffing and shift management
work order / CMMS systems
Proven ability to effectively mentor and coordinate staff and student workers.
Strong proficiency in computer applications, including the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), digital workflow tools, and database management systems.
Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision, manage competing priorities, and maintain a high level of performance and accuracy under pressure.
Exceptionally strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, backed by meticulous organizational habits and attention to detail.
Ability to work with a broad range of diverse individuals and groups to form a safe and inclusive campus community.
Active driver’s license and driving record acceptable to our insurance carrier.
Overall Work Environment:
College campus-based role in a small residential college setting.
Daily interaction with students, faculty, and administrative leadership.
Steady mix of office work, field inspections, and operational oversight.
May have responsibilities for emergencies and after-hours issues.
Fast-paced environment with multiple competing priorities.
Physical Requirements:
Environmental Conditions
Exposure to both indoors and outdoors with normal temperature ranges for the region and seasons.
Traditional noise of a busy office setting can be expected.?At times based on building locations there may be exposure to loud noises.
Working spaces may be crowded based on traffic and space configuration.
Routine exposure to cleaning chemicals to perform duties.
Lifting and Carrying
Ability to regularly lift up to 20 lbs.
Infrequent lifting of 50 lbs.
Frequent lifting and carrying of light to moderate office equipment (laptop or meeting materials) weight items.?
Mobility
Work is consistently performed across the campus with the need to sit, walk, climb and stand throughout the day.
Ability to bend, stoop, and kneel?to pick up items as necessary.
Climbing various staircases across the campus to engage in meetings and/or presentations.
Utilize mobility assistive devices and equipment as necessary.
Dexterity and Hand-Eye Coordination
Manual dexterity for handling small office-related objects.
Fine motor skills for work performed on laptop.
Infrequent need to reach overhead or below knee level to perform work duties.
Ability to safely handle, operate, and manipulate standard hand and power tools required for basic facilities troubleshooting and repairs.
Sensory Requirements
Good vision (with corrective lenses, as necessary) required for extensive reading, data analysis, monitoring video displays, and performing precise, detailed maintenance work or inspections.
Good hearing (with assistive devices, as necessary) to effectively communicate with diverse campus constituencies, participate in meetings, and identify mechanical or building alarms.
